Lemp Mansion

When John Adam Lemp arrived in St. Louis from Eschwege, Germany in 1838, he seemed no different from the thousands of other immigrants who poured into the Gateway to the West during the first half of the 19th century. Lemp originally sought his fortune as a grocer.

But his store was unique for its ability to supply an item sold by none of his competitors - lager beer. Lemp had learned the art of brewing the effervescent beverage under the tutelage of his father in Eschwege, and the natural cave system under St. Louis provided the perfect temperature for aging beer.

Lemp soon realized that the future of lager beer in America was as golden as the brew itself, and in 1840 he abandoned the grocery business to build a modest brewery at 112 S. Second Street. A St. Louis industry was born. The brewery enjoyed marvelous success and John Adam Lemp died a millionaire.

This is a very historic building. Lots of history in it. Interesting to see. Food is very good but a bit pricey. Usually pretty busy in the evening and weekends. Call ahead.

This is not only a delicious place to eat, but also interesting. Your waiter can fill you in on bits of history about the Lemp family while you enjoy fantastic food. It is also a bed and breakfast.

I have tried / done everything at Lemp Mansion. I have gone to their murder mystery theater, eaten many times for lunch and dinner, taken the spirit tours once offered on Monday nights and stayed overnight. I am getting ready to take a new friend to eat there as well as stay overnight in August. If you looking for a place not noisy and quiet, this probably isn't it. Last time we stayed overnight we got a 1:00 a.m. concert of "I Will Survive" in the courtyard from a drunk wedding guest. Needless to say she wasn't in tune. But the whole point of visiting is to have fun, explore an old, historical house and just not let anyone or anything's attitude ruin your good time. We will be staying on the top floor on a night when the staff leaves early. We plan to grab our flashlights and go exploring if there aren't any others staying over. It's going to be SO MUCH FUN! Looking forward to the great meal. Check it out!
